You have said that „our Leaders of today need the philosophy of the past, paired with the scientific knowledge and technology of tomorrow.” What are the first steps to achieving that goal?

 

Well, first of all we need to understand that our future scenarios will be improvised and created and the only thing we can impact and change is „the now“. We have to rediscover „the art of thinking” and understand basic core concepts from the past that we can project onto the 21st Century. There are too many frustrated zombies walking around today and I believe we can do much better. By combining tomorrow`s technology and science with the philosophy of the past, we can create new mental models and new boxes. This is basically what creation is all about in comparison to innovation which is doing more of the same only more efficient. As first steps, we can start by mingling with a diverse group of people with various forms of knowledge and then just “do stuff” together, regardless of mistakes, creating cultures of participation and co-creation. The second thing is that we should all take more time for thinking and dig into the field of philosophy.  The organizations and leaders need a „digital mindset“. It is our conscious approach towards change that will influence how we adapt. There is no transformation from A to B, there is no end state; instead, we need to understand that digitization changes every aspect of our world within the framework of the law of physics. For that, we do not (only) need the IT, but philosophy, or better, we need more philosophers. Staying curious, show interest in learning new things, and (re)discovering the art of thinking is where I would say we need to start.

 

Your concept — “new culture of leadership” — is based on efficiency and happiness. Can you explain that?

 

The machine we have created is so hyper-efficient, it will find everything that is not hyper-efficient. If companies do not understand that, they will die because they have too many similar experts in the organization e.g. carrying too much load. We must focus on efficiency and with it, there are of course some tough decisions to be made. At the same time, we should enjoy progress and change because we are living in maybe the most exciting time in our history. Steve Jobs famously said: “Stay foolish, stay hungry”. Referring to both of these components, hungry defines how to become „better“ e.g. more efficient and using technology to improve our lives, and the foolish part represents the playfulness that, from a philosophy standpoint, help us master the second part – „The art of living“. The whole concept of „Work-Life-Balance” is something I have never understood. It is all a wrong focus. It is like trying to map two contrary powers fighting against each other, it simply cannot work. We only have one life, and that is what we try to balance out in terms of efficiency and happiness – Try life-life-balance. Technology will, therefore, take care of many hassles and problems and left is the playfulness, keeping an “amateur” mindset, and our subjective conscious choice between positivism and negativism. The “Good-Guys” will outrun the “Bad-Guys” and enjoy the journey. Being positive will help the team and the ecosystem you are in to exploit new opportunities.

 

What are the main challenges for our new leaders and company CEO’s now and how to deal with that?

 

The key here is the word „challenges” as there are of course multiple. I would like to pick out two, though. A CEO today is a Manager of Change; it is change all the time. The other challenge is building empathy and trust. The future “winners” are CEOs who maximize empathy and lead change.    

 

Please tell us more about your upcoming book “Wild Knowledge” which deals with the complexity of knowledge and the lack of wisdom in society!

 

Today, we live in a world where society gathers knowledge faster than it gathers wisdom. It is a world of permanent revolution and change. Those who manage to find, structure and exploit the power of “Wild Knowledge” – the untamed data, learnings and experiences that flourish in our lives and minds – will excel in business and life and come out as winners. We need to develop our ability to understand and judge which aspects of that knowledge are applicable to business and life in general. This is the so-called “Vicious Wisdom” which will force you to unlearn, to choose an approach of unthinking, and in order to reach a deeper understanding, meaning and reason in your quest to find ever–superior solutions. In the book „Wild Knowledge  - Outthink the Revolution“  I do on the one hand take up things that I have learned and studied myself over time during my years as an entrepreneur and as a consultant to many larger international corporations namely focusing on „IDEAS“ on „FOCUS & SIMPLICITY“ and on „EMOTIONS & VALUES“. The book is built around finding and taming wild knowledge, the concept of ideas that everyone is looking for. The book also reflects some of my business philosophical thesis about where I believe we are heading with predictions and reflections on how our business world, our economic models, our political structures and our lives will change both influenced by how we drive the change from within, and also how the outside factors will influence our lives. The book also takes up my thoughts on where we are heading in terms of quantum physics, AI, digital in general, and what will remain „Menschlich“ and what will be left unanswered in a world of exponential technologies and scientific progress.   

 

Can you give a short introduction about your keynote speech to RIGA COMM delegates and those who are still thinking whether to participate?  

 

I will talk about wild knowledge, taking the audience on a walk through our created history and I will be taking an outlook on where we might be heading in our improvised future. I will also talk about the forces of change that are driving us from the outside and impact our lives and how the digitization impacts every aspect of our life.  Further, I will be talking about how to change your perception exploiting other views, a different mindset.  Our presumed reality is not what we think, and there are still mysteries and questions left unanswered for us to exploit on. The keynote influences how we think and generate impulses. The listeners have the answers, or at least they have access to all answers right in their pockets, so we need to find ways of coming up with the right questions re-discovering the “art of thinking”. Today it is more about seeing what is hidden right in front of you — in plain sight — to understand what we have forgotten and unlearned. The extraordinary is hidden in plain sight, in the ordinary.
